Why Foreigners Need a Tax Code in Italy
The Codice Fiscale (Italian Tax Code) is essential for anyone who wants to live, work, or conduct activities in Italy, including foreign citizens. It's not just a tax obligation but a key to accessing numerous fundamental services.
According to ISTATdata, over 5 million foreign citizens reside in Italy, all holding an Italian Tax Code.
Activities requiring a Tax Code:
- Employment: Signing any work contract (employee or freelance)
- Healthcare: Registration with the National Health Service (SSN)

Names with Special Characters
Italian Tax Codes only use the 26 letters A-Z (no accents, umlauts, or special characters). Names with special characters are converted:
- Müller → MULLER
- José → JOSE
- François → FRANCOIS
- Björk → BJORK
Double Names and Surnames
For compound names, all parts are considered together. "María José" becomes one name for calculation purposes.
Name Transliteration (Non-Latin Scripts)
Names in Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, etc. must be transliterated to Latin characters following official guidelines. Use the romanization as it appears in your passport.
