Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Italian Tax Code

Complete guide with answers to all questions about the Italian Codice Fiscale

Tax Code Calculation

How is the Italian Tax Code calculated?

The Italian Tax Code (Codice Fiscale) consists of 16 alphanumeric characters: 3 letters from surname, 3 from first name, 2 digits for birth year, 1 letter for month, 2 digits for day (+40 for females), 4 characters for municipality cadastral code, and 1 control character (CIN).

Is the online calculator free?

Yes, CodiceFiscale.expert is completely free with no usage limits and no registration required. You can calculate as many tax codes as you need.

Is the generated Tax Code official?

Our calculator uses the official algorithm from the Italian Revenue Agency to generate an algorithmically correct code. For official issuance with legal validity, you must contact the Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate).

How does calculation work for women?

For women, 40 is added to the birth day. So if a woman was born on the 15th, the Tax Code shows 55. This allows distinguishing men and women born on the same day.

What are the month letters in the Tax Code?

Each month is represented by a specific letter: A=January, B=February, C=March, D=April, E=May, H=June, L=July, M=August, P=September, R=October, S=November, T=December.

How are consonants extracted from the surname?

The first 3 consonants of the surname are taken. If not enough, vowels are added. If the surname has fewer than 3 letters, X is added. Example: Smith → SMT, Fo → FOX.

What is the rule for names with 4+ consonants?

If the first name has 4 or more consonants, the 1st, 3rd and 4th consonants are taken. Example: Giovanni → GNN. If it has 3 or fewer consonants, they are used in order.

Can I calculate the Tax Code without knowing the exact municipality?

No, the cadastral code of the birth municipality is essential. Our database includes all 7904 Italian municipalities with their cadastral codes.

Foreigners and Born Abroad

How is the Tax Code calculated for those born abroad?

For those born abroad, instead of the municipal code, the foreign country code is used, which starts with Z followed by 3 digits. Example: Z404 for Germany, Z352 for Romania.

Can foreigners have an Italian Tax Code?

Yes, any foreign citizen who has tax, work or health relations in Italy can and must obtain an Italian Tax Code.

How do foreigners get an official Tax Code?

Foreigners must go to the Revenue Agency with: valid passport or ID, residence permit (if non-EU), and fill out form AA4/8.

Do EU citizens have simplified procedures?

Yes, European Union citizens can request the Tax Code with just their ID document, without needing a residence permit.

How does it work for AIRE registrants?

Italian citizens registered with AIRE (Registry of Italians Abroad) keep their original Italian Tax Code. The code doesn't change based on residence.

Omocodia

What is omocodia?

Omocodia occurs when two or more people have the same algorithmically calculated Tax Code (same surname, name, date and place of birth). The Revenue Agency resolves this by replacing some digits with letters.

How is omocodia resolved?

The Revenue Agency progressively replaces digits with letters according to this table: 0=L, 1=M, 2=N, 3=P, 4=Q, 5=R, 6=S, 7=T, 8=U, 9=V. Starting from the last digit.

Can I know if I have an omocodic Tax Code?

Yes, our verification tool automatically recognizes omocodic codes and validates them correctly.

Is omocodia common?

It's relatively rare but possible, especially with common surnames and names in large cities. The Revenue Agency handles these cases automatically.

Verification and Decoding

How to verify if a Tax Code is valid?

Use our verification tool: we check the CIN control character, format validity, data consistency, and also recognize omocodic codes.

What can I discover from reverse Tax Code lookup?

From reverse Tax Code lookup you can extract: gender (M/F), complete birth date, and the cadastral code of birthplace (but not name and surname).

What is the CIN control character?

The CIN (Control Internal Number) is the last character of the Tax Code. It's calculated with an algorithm that verifies all 15 previous characters, preventing transcription errors.

How does the CIN algorithm work?

Characters in odd and even positions are converted to numbers using different tables, summed and divided by 26. The remainder indicates the control letter (0=A, 1=B, ..., 25=Z).

Can I generate a Health Card online?

How to get the official Health Card?

How long is the Health Card valid?

The Health Card is valid for 6 years. Upon expiration, it's automatically renewed and mailed to your address.
