When the Tax Code Changes
The Tax Code (Codice Fiscale) is a permanent identifier that, in principle, never changes throughout a person's life. However, there are specific situations where a modification or correction may be needed.
Important: In Italy, the Tax Code does not changewith marriage. Women keep their maiden name in the Tax Code for life.
Marriage and Surname
Unlike many other countries, in Italy marriage does not result in any modification of the Tax Code. Italian women keep their birth surname in the Tax Code, regardless of whether they use their husband's name socially.
- The Tax Code remains unchanged for life
- No application is required after marriage
- The birth surname is always used for tax and administrative purposes
This is a frequent question from foreigners living in Italy: your Tax Code will always contain your maiden name, even after marriage.
Official Name Change
If a person obtains an official name change through a prefect's decree or court ruling, the Tax Code must be updated. This includes:
- Court-ordered name changes
- Prefect decree for name modifications
- Gender transition name changes
- Adoption (child takes adoptive parents' surname)
In these cases, a new Tax Code is issued, and the old one is deactivated.
Error Correction
If the Tax Code contains data errors (wrong birth date, misspelled name, etc.), a correction must be requested at the Revenue Agency. Common errors include:
- Misspelled name or surname
- Wrong date of birth
- Wrong place of birth (municipality code)
- Wrong gender indicator
Note: If the error is in the control character only, it may indicate an omocodia case, not an error.
Modification Procedure
To request a Tax Code modification or correction:
- Go to a Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate) office
- Present documentation certifying the correct data
- Fill out the request form (AA4/8 or specific correction form)
- Receive the new Tax Code (usually immediate)
- Wait for new Health Card (mailed within 2-4 weeks)
You may also need to update your Tax Code with other entities (bank, employer, utilities) after the correction.
Required Documents
For Error Correction:
- Valid ID document
- Updated birth certificate (not older than 6 months)
- Old Health Card or Tax Code certificate
For Name Change:
- Valid ID document
- Prefect's decree or court ruling
- Updated birth certificate with new data
For Adoption:
- Adoption decree
- Child's updated birth certificate
- Adoptive parents' ID documents
What Doesn't Require a Change
The following do NOT require a Tax Code modification:
- Change of residence: The Tax Code contains birth municipality, not residence
- Marriage: No surname change in Italy for tax purposes
- Address change: Only update your address with the Revenue Agency
- Acquiring citizenship: The original Tax Code remains valid
